New York City, June 2, 2013--The calls for the Turkish leader Tayip Erdogan's resignation rang out loud and clear at today's second solidarity demonstration in Zuccotti Park for Istanbul's Taksim Square protesters. What may have seemed initially like
a local incident over privatization of public space has exploded into the largest riots for decades to occur in Istanbul, and indeed throughout Turkey, with some of the issues at stake being the increasingly authoritarian postures of the government. Tens of thousands of protesters demonstrated in Taksim Square over the proposed destruction of the cherished Gezi Park, which officials want to replace with a barracks-style mall. The police's heavy-handed response, including the use of tear gas, to the initial peaceful protests to the uprooting of several trees in Gezi Park, led to solidarity actions in other Turkish cities and around the world.
